An old African Buffalo, and old African Buffalo are irritable, grouchy and dangerous. He’s old and has probably been excluded from his herd now and will see his last days to himself. This was one picture of several which we took just metres from us, and when he moved out towards us, we felt it best for us to just move on.

An African White-backed Vulture in atypical vulture pose. It’s a picture which I felt led itself quite well to monochrome. This one is captive, which I took in a rehabilitation centre near Limpopo, South Africa. He’ll remain there for the rest of his days, having suffered a broken wing, of which never healed properly.

Everyone has their favourite photos, and this is a sentimental one of mine.

Nkuringo was an old silverback of the first mountain gorilla group we visited in 2008, the Nkuringo Group at South Bwindi in Uganda. There were sixteen in the group then, but the leadership belonged to another younger silverback called Safari.

Nkuringo was the last of the group we spent time with, of some fifteen minutes, and was stripping the vines of leaves, not much bothered by his visitors. He was very old and seemed to have an injury to his mouth which we later learned had obtained in a fight two years earlier, leaving him slightly paralysed and making it difficult to eat.

If anyone still thinks that gorillas have the persona of a 1933 style King Kong, then they’d soon be persuaded otherwise by this guy.

Sadly, Nkuringo died of natural causes in April 2008 aged forty-nine, just six weeks after our visit.

Taken using a Nikon D300 with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens at 200mm, f/3.3, 1/125 and ISO 560.

I've another gallery addition this time of black and white versions of photos taken in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Namibia, between 2005 and 2009.

I (eventually) found time to add another gallery, this time of black and white versions of photos taken in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Namibia, between 2005 and 2009.

As much as I like color, I find that occasionally some pictures don’t seem to post-process quite so well in color (no matter how hard I try) as they might do in black and white.

So I’ve uploaded ten such pictures into Monochrome which I’ve just added to the Galleries page.

In Namibia in November 2008 we really wanted to see Dead Vlei at Sossusvlei on our own and with nobody else there to spoil the barrenness. Pictures of Dead Vlei needed to contain no other people, just the sky, sand and acacias.

We arrived early, just after the sunrise, and we were relieved to see that it would just be ourselves – at least for a time anyway.

I used mainly a 12-24 zoom lens, and more often than not at the widest end. This image is a little unusual in that I’d used a 70-200 zoom instead to isolate this section and catch the lines of the dunes. And while the scene looks spectacular in color, I thought I’d try a monochrome variant here.

About an hour or so after we’d arrived, more people had arrived and the riverbed started to fill with people.

Taken using a Nikon D300 with a 70-200 lens at 80mm, f/8, 1/750 and ISO 200.

Dead Vlei is a pan, part of riverbed now isolated by the highest sand dunes in the world, some reaching up to 300 meters which rest on a sandstone terrace. The clay pan was formed after rainfall, when the river flooded, creating temporary pools where the of water allowed acacia trees to grow. When the climate changed and drought hit the area, the sand dunes encroached on the pan, which blocked the river from the area. The remaining skeletons of the trees, which are believed to be about 900 years old, are now black because the intense sun has scorched them. The wood does not decompose because it is so dry.
