About

david lloyd

I’m a photographer of wildlife and travel from New Zealand living in London where I toil in an agency studio by day. I arrived in late 1989 for a six month journey and I’m still here journeying twenty years later. Some favourite places are, and have been Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Namibia, Botswana and Richmond Park in England.

I have two eyes, one’s for color, the other’s for black and white, because I like each equally. If you’re going to take successful pictures of wild things, you need to have in order of importance: knowledge of your subject, preparation, a good sense of picture, and a good camera. The luck comes thereafter.

Someone once remarked to me the pointlessness of storing pictures on computers after taking them. I did this for a long time. Then I used my other skills to make a website to show them to other people.

I travel with either a photo tour, on my own, or with Gina, who often threatens to usurp me with her own photography.

I have acquired each portfolio of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year series since its inception in 1991. This year it was a privilege to see my picture A Flick of the Tail chosen for its cover.

I have an active Facebook page here and I’m on Twitter too as @davidllo

I’m using Nikons D3s, D700 and D300 with:

  • 12-24 f/4
  • 50 f/1.4
  • 85 f/1.4
  • 70-200 f/2.8
  • 300 f/4.0
  • 200-400 f/4.0
  • 1.4 teleconverter

I also have a nice pocketable Panasonic LX3, which quite ironically, has been the source of my only National Geographic picture to date.

I process everything in Adobe Lightroom. None of these pictures, save for the odd black and white one, has been processed using Adobe Photoshop or any other retouching or compositing tool.

Possibly the best tip I can suggest is to stay with your subject for as long as possible.
