2011WPOTY 2011

Well there we are. My picture A Flick of the Tail graces the cover of this year’s rather prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year annual. After twenty years of collecting and admiring the books, I now find that I’m on one. Needless to say, I am quite delighted.
The competition this year attracted nearly 41,000 entries, which was whittled down to 12,152 entries for the semi-final round, then down to 1082 for the final round of judging. Of these, 104 were selected for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition and accompanying book.
I have collected these now very collectable books since their inception in 1991 and some years ago I aimed for inclusion in the book, and now I’m on it. So I feel very privileged to have been considered and ultimately successful.
I had success with two other images reaching the final round as well, with two lions in Lovestruck, and a capture of the annual wildebeest crossing in Mara Meleé as seen on 500px.
But the portfolio cover took me unawares, I least expected it, because until now there had not been a black and white picture chosen for the cover.

Anne, I have sent you an email. The print is now available for purchase, and I will also be announcing it here soon.

Hi Iloyd,
Can see you already texted Mark back. Just wanted to say: Im the same. Was really disapointed that I could not buy a print of this wonderful and magical picture. I have become a big fan of yours after seeing this images at the NHM in London. Though of all your images it is still the “a flick of the tail” that speaks to me the most. Hope you soon have it open for prints.

Great shot..Photography is an Art..This picture proves that…Really awesome picture..
I learnt the basic photography rules from Mr. Kishore Mamillapalli who is one of the leading wildlife photographers from South Africa. He used to say that “Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder”. If you like what you see on your camera screen, or through the viewfinder, you will like the photograph.
There are some basic photography rules for composition. Once you know these rules, you can use them, ignore them, or break them. Follow your gut, and you will end up with spectacular, sometimes breathtaking results. Kishore is really an astonishing wild life photographer and has a great eye for details..

Have to say thanks for the inspiration last night at Natural History Museum my friends and I were so blown away by your photography but mostly how humble and down to earth you are. Thank you!
